Joonas Karhu

Joonas Karhu is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced senior figures in the online gambling industry, having spent more than a decade in various roles across the sector.

He has been a driving force behind Bojoko becoming one of the most popular online casino comparison sites, taking it from launch to tens of thousands of members.

A founding member of the team, he has been responsible for educating partners and industry stakeholders about Bojoko’s concept.

Joonas has also helped establish Bojoko as a recognisable brand among casino players in the UK and beyond, devising and deploying its advertising and marketing strategies.

Joonas has also played a critical role in ensuring Bojoko sets the standard for responsible gambling and safe gaming, coming up with various compliance initiatives.

This includes working closely with a gambling law specialists to undertake a full audit of the Bojoko site.

Following the audit, Joonas was responsible for rolling out numerous changes to the Bojoko site to further improve compliance and to ensure the highest player protection standards were being met.

This has only been possible because of his passion for, and extensive experience of, retail and online gambling having first entered the sector back in 2006 as an online poker player.

After five years of playing the game at an amateur level, Joonas put down his digital chips when he joined university and replaced them for real chips after taking at job as a croupier for the Finnish monopoly Veikkaus (then RAY).

On completing his studies at the JAMK University of Applied Sciences and obtaining a Bachelor of Business degree, Joonas started project management role at big-name gambling operator Kolikkopelit.

Moving from his native Finland to Malta, Joonas embarked on a career that would see him take up several senior management roles at various operators before joining Bojoko in 2017.

Joonas also has a distinguished academic career.

In addition to his baccalaureate, he holds a Vocational Qualification in Business Administration and is a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration.

Outside of work, Joonas is an avid golfer and also likes to exercise and keep healthy. An enthusiastic traveller, favourite countries he has visited included the United States, Turkey, and Italy.

When not playing golf or travelling, Joonas likes to unwind by watching Netflix and in particular Chuck, House, and How I Met Your Mother.
